I have a Whirlpool side by side fridge that has stopped cooling. It''s 7 years old. The fan is running. Also I can hear the compressor clicking on and off, but it is very warm to the touch. Do you think my compressor has gone bad, or could this be a freon issue? I have the correct freon (r134a) and it even has leak sealant in it. Hoping for some help. Thanks. Alan

Hello,

You have one of two proplems. The worst one being, you have a bad compressor.

The one you want is, you have a bad overload or relay on the compressor. The first thing you want to do is, clean the black coils on the back of the fridge that get warm. If they are not clean this will cause the compressor to overheat. If there aren't dirty, then if you have a Fan down by the compressor, make sure it is running. This will also cause the compressor to overheat.

Make sure the space the refrigerator is running in isn't more than 85 degrees. This too will cause the compressor to overheat.

If none of those things are an issue, replace the components on the side of the compresser. Replace all of them. If you have the same problem when you replace the components on the side of the compressor, you have a bad compressor.

Average repair cost for replacing compress can range from 350 - 450 dollars.
